The late Ernest “Ernie” Banks (born January 31, 1931), also known as “Mr. Cub” and “Mr. Sunshine,” was a former professional baseball player in the United States. Over the course of 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), from 1953 to 1971, he played shortstop and first base. He played his whole Major League Baseball career with the Chicago Cubs. He was an All-Star in the National League (NL) for 11 seasons, appearing in a total of 14 All-Star Games. Banks was up in the Dallas area and attended the University of Texas at Dallas. In 1950, he made his professional baseball debut with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League. He remained in the military for two years before returning to the Monarchs, where he played until he was called up to the big leagues in September 195In 1955, he made his first appearance in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Banks’ finest seasons came in 1958 and 1959, when he was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player on consecutive seasons in both years. In 1958, he batted.313 and led the National League (NL) with 47 home runs (HR) and 129 runs batted in, respectively (RBI). In 1959, he hit.304 with 45 home runs and 143 RBIs, which was the most in the National League. During the 1961 season, Banks was moved from right field to left field, and then to first base for the remainder of the season. In the mid-1960s, Cubs manager Leo Durocher grew dissatisfied with Banks’s performance, claiming that the slugger’s ability to hit was deteriorating. However, Durocher believed that he was unable to remove Banks from the lineup owing to the star’s widespread popularity among Cubs fans. For the years 1967 to 1971, Banks served as a player-coach. In 1970, he hit his 500th home run of his professional baseball career. After retiring from playing in 1972, he joined the Cubs’ coaching staff as an assistant. During and during his time with the Cubs, Banks was involved in the Chicago community as a volunteer. A charity organisation was established by him, and he went on to become the first black Ford Motor Company dealer in the United States. He also ran unsuccessfully for a position in local politics. In 1977, he became the first African-American to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was selected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team for his contributions to the game. In recognition of his contributions to athletics, he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 201Banks resides in the Los Angeles metropolitan region.
